Over the past 10 years since my diagnosis, I have seen my reading deeply affected by my illnessâ€"and my illness greatly affected by my reading. One of the classic ways other people can tell that Im heading off the deep end into hypomania or mania is when I start buying or borrowing a ton of books. When I say a book buying shopping spree, I dont mean 2 books, or 5 books, or even 10 books. To my mind, buying 20 at a time is perfectly reasonable. Im doing research for my blog/articles/own novel, I tell myself to justify it.  Its collection development. Its to help me write my thesis. I can read them. I can read them all. The boxes arrive, stacked up on my porch outside. My  cats climb in the cardboard wasteland after I tear the boxes open. Theres no more room on my shelves. I tell myself Ill buy another shelf. No, two more bookcases. Nope, three would keep be going for a few months. My mind is convinced that spending hundreds of dollars on this is justifiable and healthy. My credit card statement a month later suggests otherwise. Likewise, sometimes I go on binge-borrowing at the library as in my example above. I could check out ten 500-page books with two-week loans and totally believe that I can read them all, each in a day. Then I get withdrawn and depressed, my mind disorganized, and I stop going outside my house for days. Im not well enough to make it to the library. And the fines keep going  up. My mind focuses on a big idea, like reading 400 books a year, and I latch onto it even though the most Ive ever read in a year is 60. I obsessively change up my Goodreads Reading Challenge and calculate over and over how many books Id have to read a month/week/day to reach my challenge goal. And then I start finishing books faster, too. My eyes inhale, thats the best word I can describe it, just suck up all the words on a page. I finish one book a day. Its not enough. Two a day for two weeks until the sobering reality kicks in. Im manic. The behaviors Ive described above might not be that unusual for book lovers, and indeed, they might not seem out of the ordinary in isolation. But to me they are symptomatic of a larger, more dangerous mood dip upwards, pieces of a larger puzzle that say my medication needs to be switched up. Because buying 20 books three days in a row can wreck my credit, wipe out my meager freelance income, and leave me staring at double-stacked shelves of books I know I no longer want to readâ€"or could read. Same with reading 10 books in a week. It might seem not that unusual for avid readers, especially speed readers. But for me, it sends my mood sky-high. Each finished book, each Read entry  makes me more confident. Nothing can stop me. A novelist myself, I feel the Flow and spend hours writing, neglecting my actual, paid work, dumping my efforts into writing word after word, page after page, chapter after chapter, until Im 10,000 words in after 24 hours, and my mood crashes. Then I really hate reading. How depression  affects my reading, and how reading affects my  depression Eventually, the cold, crushing reality sets in. I dont remember anything I read. I fiction reads like  gibberish. Worse: I cant read anymore. They soak me in mood stabilizers to treat the delusions and the rapid cycling, the mania. But Im catatonic. I cant focus on anything. It takes me an hour to read two pages. I flash back to undergraduate when I majored in English and chose to focus on 18th and 19th century British literature. I would spend hours in my dorm room trying to make sense of the shapes before me. I tried audiobooks, reading side by side. It didnt do anything. I made no progress. I cling to Sparknotes to get the gist of the plot. I bullshitted my way through essays and coasted on my reputation as a promising student in the department. Professors worked with me, even as disability services was practically useless. Nothing is worse than not being able to read, especially when you are a book blogger and book journalist, librarian and novelist. Not reading just feeds the depressive cycle. Im worthless. A lightweight. A fake. A con artist. A manic depressive. Finding peace in reading Ultimately, it shakes out to a bearable medium between spurts of consumption to quieter lulls. After 10 years with this diagnosis, Ive learned that there is no such thing as constant. You wake up and you dont know what each day will be like, what each hour or minute will bring. But throughout it all, reading has been an anchor, a rock. It has fueled me with stories when I needed escapism, has brought me joy and inspiration. My reading experience is a fucked up roller coaster, sure. But I dont want to get off and live a life without books or a reading practice of any kind. And as a novelist, I try to sneak the mentally divergent into my fiction, celebrating the quirks and joys and challenges of life with a mental illness, same with coverage of mental illness disability on my blog and in my articles for websites and publications. Reading and bipolar disorder have a bizarre symbiotic relationship of healing and hell. I feel it is time that parents should take more control over their children’s lives. However in modern society, sitting in front of a television for hours and playing games such as ‘Call of Duty’, is the new definition of being social. Although an increase of parental control could result in a suppression of individuality, it is not being asked that you should give no freedom at all, but to limit it to a certain extent instead. By limiting the freedom of a child, does not mean anything like, no more Facebook or eradicating there right to do what they want or play a video game, but instead creating a boundary. Furthermore, the result of this method will not lead to any negative effects as my studies have reached the conclusion that setting guidelines will have a positive outcome. Ladies and gentlemen, the proposal to stress more control over children’s lives should go on ahead. Such a consideration can result in a more socially active child, meaning participating in outdoor activities. Also more control could lead to a better relationship between your child and yourself. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not asking to completely suppress their individuality, and removing there freedom, but instead to put a limit to what they have right now. Most of Hardys tales are about very young and beautiful women throwing themselves at men and marrying them at a young age. Soonly after the man realises that the woman he married isnt beautiful anymore he moves out and divorces her and finds another young lady to marry. In the Three Strangers, there is only one main female character, Mrs Fennel, the wife of a shepherd which it tells us at the beginning of the tale. At the beginning of the tale, Hardy portrays women at a party by telling the reader all about their appearances and what there personalities are like and what they are wearing at the current time. The main character Mrs Fennel is portrayed in a negative kind of way and is called frugal woman when introduced to the reader. Hardy from the start of the tale doesnt want the reader to like Mrs Fennel after his comment of calling her frugal. Mrs Fennel was the orchestrate of the party and she decided on what everyone else had to do and at what time they should do it. In one instance, Mrs Fennel trys to distract the musicians that are playing music at the party, but when they just ignore her, Mrs Fennel sits down in a tired mind. The reader maybe has sympathy for Mrs Fennel, but Hardy is trying to convince the reader that she isnt a nice woman. In the tale The Melancholy Hussar of the German Legion there is only one main female character, Phyllis Grove who lives with her father. Phyllis is a single woman and thinks her future is merely bleak while she is living with her father on a farm. In reality, Phyllis wanted a man to love, marry and be with for the rest of her life. This is shown when Hardy says the daughters seclusion was great and she became so shy that if she met a stranger she felt ashamed at his gaze, walked awkwardly, and blushed to her shoulders. Hardy makes the reader learn that every man or stranger walks past Phyllis she blushes and feels embarrassed to talk to him, even if she likes him. When the German army came to were Phyllis lives, one of the Hussars notices Phyllis, she immediately likes the Hussar soldier and Hardy writes a short sentence to make out Phyllis wasnt blamed for liking him. In Fellow-Townsmen there are two main female characters. Throughout the tale, Thomas Hardy contrasts the differences between one relationship and another. Mrs Barnet is a wealthy young woman married to Mr Barnet and Mrs Downe maybe more badly off than Mrs Barnet and also is married to Mr Downe. The relationships of both of the couples are widely different to each other when Mrs Downe and Mrs Barnet are swept out to sea. In the tale Interlopers at the Knap, it begins with two men talking to each other about women. Farmer Darton comments on the girl he is about to be married to. Farmer Darton is going to marry a young girl called Sally Hall, who is living with her mother. Hardy describes Sally as strong minded, independent an that she is very emotional in her views. Hardy makes the reader to like Sally and portrays her in positive way and that she wants to marry well for her family. Farmer Darton is happy to marry Sally, because he thinks that marrying someone who is less down the order in wealth than himself will mean that Sally will look up to him. During the tale, Farmer Darton describes Sally to a close friend as just being simple. This tells the reader that Darton doesnt think Sally is really anything special just a woman he can begin to love for a couple of years and then divorce and move onto another young woman who is desperate to marry a wealthy man When Sally is waiting for Farmer Darton to turn up with her wedding dress, she says to her mother; I dont care if he comes or not. This shows that Sally isnt really that keen on marrying Farmer Darton in the first place and is showing that there relationship is on leaps and bounds and there is a weakness between them. This figure includes everything you could think of: tuition, room, board, transportation, books, personal expenses, etc. You could also call this a school’s â€Å"sticker price† - it’s what a student would pay if she didn’t get one dollar of financial aid.Keep in mind this is an average figure - if a student lives especially far from the school and pays more in transportation cost, for example, his CoA might be higher. These next strategies will help you manage your income and spending on a daily basis once you’re a student. While you’re reading, think of other ways you can increase your income and decrease your expenses. Increase Your Income #1: Keep Applying for Scholarships As you hone your academic and professional interests, you may be able to find scholarships or grants that are a good fit for yourgoals. You don’t have to be a high school student in order to qualify for many scholarships (the Tylenol scholarship is a good example of this). Check with your academic department and/or career center for more information about possible scholarship awards. This quote shows the difference between folktale and science fiction because a folktale creates something that is completely unfamiliar whereas science fiction takes something familiar and makes it unfamiliar. Similar to folktale, fantasy causes tension between the â€Å"arbitrary supernatural phenomena and the empirical norms they infiltrate. †(8) This means things that are completely unfamiliar to the reader intrude into what they see as real. This can cause confusion, because it does not completely create its own world, and it does not go by the rules and laws of our world, so it is in between the two worlds.
